Once we recieve your application, you will be contacted to set up an orientation.

  Haven House relies on many volunteers to provide an integral part of its services.


Natasha is a young lady who volunteered with her family.  She wrote this great article about her experience.

There are several different roles in which volunteers make important contributions.
They include:

  • Office Volunteer
  • Dinner Cook
  • Activity Leader (for adults or children)
  • Maintenance Volunteer
  • Fundraising Assistant
  • Member of our Board of Directors
  • Other roles based on your personal interests and skills
  • Volunteer Staff Assistant / Intern
  • Community Service (court-ordered)

 

Office Volunteer

Office volunteers help by staffing our front office, answering phones and performing other tasks to keep operations running smoothly.
Shifts are available for two to four hours.   Fill out an application to let us know your availability to help with running our office.

Includes managing our food bank and donation activities!
 


Dinner Cook

Help by making dinner for our residents.  You can do it on your own or with a friend.  Pick a day to come and make dinner!
Our
staff will make sure you have everything you need.
If you have your own idea for a fun dinner, let us know.

Dinner prep usually takes about two hours, from 3:30-5:30 pm.

Activity Leader

Spend a couple hours staffing our kids playroom, providing open playtime or a craft, project or game of your choosing.
This is an important service and provides some fun for our residents' kids while parents are engaged in on-site classes and enrichment activities.
You can also lead an activity for whole families.

Maintenance Volunteer

Help us maintain our shelter with handy-man (or -woman) type work.
Includes replacing light bulbs, touch-up painting, small repairs, and other tasks according to your interest and abilities.

Fundraising Assistant

Help us with our various fundraising acitivites, from our Tailgating on the Banks of the Red Cedar cookbook, to holiday coupon books, to our Have-a-Heart campaign and more.

Member of Board of Directors

Serving on our Board is an excellent way to leverage your talents and connections to help us optimize our shelter and programming.  Inquiries regarding joining our Board will be forwarded to our Exectuive Director upon receipt by our Volunteer Coordinator.

Volunteer Staff Assistant / Intern

VSAs are volunteers who take on special responsibilities, similar to some staff duties.  

These volunteers must be exceptionally reliable, professional, respectful and flexible. 

The volunteer understands the need for confidentiality and agrees to the policies of Haven House. 

They also understand and accept diversity and cultural differences.


Responsibilities May Include:

Answering Phones:

  • transferring calls appropriately
  • taking messages with time, date, caller's name, person called and message
  • taking information on calls for shelter
Assisting residents:
  • providing items from the pantry and personal needs closet
  • exiting (assembling items from donations for their new home, checking room, etc.)
  • Assisting staff with dinner preparation as needed

Preparing, dispensing and documenting food bank orders

Accepting and documenting walk-in donations and putting items away

Organizing storage as needed

Assisting with data compilation for funding reports

Community Service (Court-Ordered)

We offer opportunities for individuals to complete court-ordered community service.  We do not host individuals with a history of any of the following: violent crime, criminal sexual conduct or drug-related crime.
