Our Remodeling Progresses....slowly

UPDATE:  January 28, 2009  We have now completed and occupied the new staff offices, where clients will have greater privacy when working with caseworkers, and where there is a play area for children who will be nearby but not participating in the often difficult discussions between caseworkers and clients.  We were the fortunate recipients of a donation of used office cubicles for this area.  New carpet has been installed in this area as well as in the hallway leading to these offices.

The area that will house our storage and the Food Bank pantry has also been completed.  We have added a new door to the outside that will facilitate bringing food into the Food Bank pantry.  Food Bank recipients will soon be able to "shop", to choose the items that constitute their designated allotments.  Previously the Food Bank pantry was so crowded that staff made arbitrary decisions to fill Food Bank orders.  Because of an accident (nails used to install the new roof were two long, and went all of the way through the cathedral ceiling) it was necessary to drywall the ceiling in the storage area (as well as in the area that will become the conference and Board room).  We were able to capitalize on this error and install 3" of much needed insulation in the ceiling that will help to reduce our energy needs in the future.

The major remaining project is to complete the conference and Board room.  Workers are rapidly reaching that goal.  At the same time the areas of the front entry that were not remodeled are being repainted.  This, combined with a phenomenal volunteer effort to paint areas of the basement and the stairwells, will make all of the facility look fresh and inviting.

UPDATE:  December 17, 2008  A new front entrance has been created so that people who come to Haven House will be met by a staff member immediately upon entering the building.  New offices have been created for the Executive Director and the Deputy Director in space that was previously our Board and conference room.  These new offices will be occupied tomorrow.  The next phase of the remodeling will be to create new offices for the staff that will provide much more privacy when dealing with clients.  These offices will be in space that was previously the office of the Executive Director and the living quarters for one of the two resident managers.  When that is completed we will begin the final phase of the remodeling.  We will create a new Board/conference room in space that was used for some staff office, and a new home for our Food Bank (with a new entrance to the outside).  Everyone is eagerly awaiting the completion of the project.

UPDATE:  October 28, 2008  After finishing our successful Capital Campaign, we are very much in the middle of our remodeling project.  Although we are behind schedule, we are beginning to see portions completed that have us excited about how our facility will be improved when the whole project is completed.  Below are before and after pictures of the men's bathroom for residents.  Not only is the bathroom more cheerful and easier to keep clean, we have repaired the leaks and the damage that was done to the sub-floor, replaced all of the plumbing fixtures, and replaced all of the tile.

In addition to finishing the resident bathrooms we have installed a new roof, poured a new handicapper-accessible concrete entrance walk to the location of a new entrance door (not yet installed), and a new concrete pad at the new entrance door to the Food Bank (also not yet installed) that will permit food recipients to access the Food Bank Directly.  Our conference room and a storeroom have been demolished and they are currently working on replacing them with new offices for the Executive Director and the Deputy Director.  We have moved the Food Bank to a temporary location so that room can be finished to move one of the night manager rooms to that location.  Much remains to be done, but we are now able to imagine how much more efficiently we will be able to use our space when this project is completed.
